WHY RENEWABLE ENERGY IN HUDSON?
1. Because of its compact grid layout, Hudson is the ideal locale for Eco-Grid.
2. Renewable energy is energy which can be replenished at the same rate at which it is used. Renewable energy can be produced locally, enabling more stable energy prices as well as creating new jobs and building a strong local economy.
3. Nearly 25% of Hudson’s families live below the poverty level and are particularly exposed to the debilitating effects of fuel poverty. Our mission and goals facilitate the growth and well-being of the community in which we live and work.
ECO-GRID: LOCAL SUPPORT
Eco-Grid’s feasibility study enjoys broad community support, having received letters of endorsement from two local municipalities, which are adjacent to each other (City of Hudson, Town of Greenport); many of the potential anchor energy customers (Hudson Housing Authority, Housing Resources of Columbia County); local economic development corporations (Hudson Development Corporation); Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson; and local environmental and community-based organizations (The Hudson Opera House, Time and Space Limited).
ECO-GRID: IMPLEMENTATION
In moving Eco-Grid forward, the primary components of our research and study include a marketing analysis of energy customers in Hudson/Greenport (heat-load calculations, market interest, and inventory of existing energy systems); site selection analysis; emissions estimation; biomass availability and sourcing options; comparison of different distributed-generation options and preliminary engineering design of a piping network to distribute hot water. To make all of this effective, the study will incorporate reporting, outreach and education, along with a local and New York State Economic Optimization Plan for the above elements.
